An ihren Songs "fasziniert die Magie ihres dunklen, verhangenen Timbre, aber auch die einzigartige Verdichtung von Jazz und Blues", schrieb ein Kritiker über die Grammy-Preisträgerin. Seit ca. 20 Jahren gehört sie zu den herausragenden afroamerikanischen Blues- & Jazz-Sängerinnen Amerikas. Mit ihrer weichen, flexiblen Altstimme singt sie neben selbst geschriebenen Songs eigenwillig interpretierte Jazz-Standards und Coverversionen von anderen bekannten Musikerinnen und Musikern. Ihr Repertoire besitzt eine stilistische Bandbreite von intensiven, sanften Blues-Balladen bis zum Folksong, von Swing bis Samba und Cool-Jazz, von Free Funk bis Pop und Rock. Ihre musikalischen Wurzeln liegen in den Traditionen der Südstaaten. Dort, im US-Staat Mississippi wurde sie 1955 geboren: "Hier müssen die Musiker Jazz spielen können, sie müssen den Blues und Rhythm'n Blues integrieren können - und sie sollten sich auch ein wenig mit Country auskennen". Das "Time Magazin" nannte sie "Amerikas beste Sängerin". Im Gespräch mit Burkhard Reinartz zeigt sie sich als leidenschaftliche, politisch wache Musikerin.
